another day of hard work at the blackwood house, if one would call it that. audition season was coming up and xander needed work as soon as possible. that was the curse of the thirties in hollywood, it seemed. god forbid someone take a break from work for a week. just like that you could be knocked off the radar and on the cover of the 'where are they now?' edition of people or us weekly, sporting a really crappy goatee and a tracksuit. the thirty-three year old man refused to have this happen to him. after all he was still attractive, he could be sexy if he tried to be or if he had to be. he wasn't in his forties yet – that would be when he slipped, and that would be when he switched into either directing or producing, or would find a comfortable spot on a television series for a couple years until officially retiring aside from cameos. from there riley would take his spot on top and xander would submit willingly and proudly to his protige. but lately riley and he had been on the fritz, and admittedly both were at fault in the situation.it had all started with the incident in xander's room with riley's urges and the subsequent refusal, and in lack of better judgment xander had called one of riley's friends a slut. the uncomfortable part of the situation was that riley was now dating said girl. while he was proud of his son, part of him didn't want to let go of the innocent little boy that knew nothing of girls or even how to talk to them. but hey, that was just part of parenting, right? maybe xander would even get to spread his own wings now that riley was preoccupied.
for while xander had gotten everything he had wished for in the social and the financial sense, he was a lonely man. years of building up a playboy facade had taken its toll on his dating prospects. no woman would take him seriously when he showed genuine interest, or no woman would so much as believe his true sincerity. the other issue was riley of course. as much as xander didn't want to say that his son limited his choices in life, it was true, as it is with any parent who loves their child too much for his/her own good. riles was sensitive to people moving in on his father, and it was endearing to xander, but lately it had been more annoying more than anything. xander wanted a wife. he wanted a permanent life partner and lover. he wanted someone to cuddle and kiss and hug and make love to whenever he could possibly do so. unfortunately, riley didn't fill those requirements for a whole slew of reasons. maybe the british man would eventually have a child of his own, hopefully a girl for him to spoil constantly. babies were his soft spot completely and utterly, and he had no trouble in admitting that. maybe that was why riley acted so young and immature all the time – or maybe he was just completely and utterly spoiled to the core. either way it was xander's fault and he acknowledged that completely. but riley was twenty-three now and so it was nothing to be fixed. he was laci's little brat now, for the most part anyway.
xander sat at his study's desk, reading and rehearsing lines for a screen test coming up in the next week. grasping his coffee cup in utter frustration. he couldn't memorize. the fight had really gotten to him and now it was starting to affect his performance at work. that was a really, really bad sign. he had never let his personal life interfere with his acting abilities, aside from when riley was sick and needed someone to take care of him and nurse him to health. he slammed his script down on the table with a grunt, taking a sip of the warm drink, prepared just the way he liked it around this time of year. pumpkin flavored cream and one splenda. in a month it would be replaced by just a peppermint creamer, nothing else. the coffee wasn't very good for his health, but like hell if xander actually gave two shits. he loved his coffee, and couldn't get through a day without needing at least two cups, one hot and one iced. the iced coffee often came from dunkin' donuts, much to his assistants annoyance. who said he couldn't be a diva once in a while too? “riley!!! come into my study please!!” as much as xander didn't want to admit it, he needed to set everything straight with his son, for the sake of his work and even more for the sake of his utter sanity. to say he was whipped by his son was completely and utterly accurate.
