In Texas, Viola's mother, Aida Riviera, gave birth to her first child, a little boy named Benjamin. Now, keep in mind, at the time of his birth, Aida and her husband Felix were very young, both of them about twenty years old. So it wasn't all that unusual when twelve years down the road, at age 32 Aida got pregnant again, this time with a baby girl, whom they named Viola Elia when she was born. The family, who had a successful italian restaurant in the town, was very close knit. Viola was very spoiled growing up, because her father viewed her as his baby and her mother was happy to have a daughter. Ben himself was incredibly protective of his baby sister, though it was easy to understand why. She was pretty, and around her sixth grade year, Viola began to catch the attention of the males at her school. Only it wasn't their attention that she wanted. She found that she was much more interested in girls than she was in boys. Of course, when she found this out she was afraid to tell her parents slightly homophobic parents, who had never been accepting of gays or lesbians. So Viola started to date boys in the hopes that maybe she could push away the feelings that she was having for girls, but with no such luck. Especially since, in her sophomore year of high school she met a girl named Kendra whom she really started to develop feelings for. The two began a secret relationship, and it wasn't until Kendra came over to Viola's house for a "sleepover" that anyone found out. Her brother, who had been visiting that weekend realized straight away that Viola had feelings for that girl. He pulled her aside and told her that if she was a lesbian then she needed to come out to their parents who would love her no matter what she was attracted to. After much debating on her part, Viola agreed with her brother and the two sat their parents down to talk to them about Viola's sexual orientation. Of course, the news hit them hard at first, but Aida was the first to accept their daughter for who she was. Felix was harder to convince, but he eventually came around. The two then asked if they could meet Kendra's parents but when Viola told Kendra about this, the girl grew angry and broke up with her, much to Viola's surprise. Kendra told Viola that it was meant to have been their secret, and that's what made everything so special. Viola was disheartened by this, naturally, but soon decided that she wouldn't waste her time on Kendra when she could find someone else. So that's how it went, for the next few years. Viola dated some of the girls who had come out at her school, though there weren't very many and it was never for very long. That all changed when Viola met Kate the summer after she graduated high school. Viola was immediately smitten with the other girl, and they soon began to date. They dated for a few months but Viola questioned Kate's faithfulness, and even accused her of being bar-sexual, that is to say she only pretended to be lesbian to attract guys. The two broke up shortly after this, and Viola packed up and went to Italy to visit some family there for a while and to get over her break up with Kate. She returned to Texas a few months after and began to work at her family's italian restaurant again, saving money so that she could move to L.A. to pursue her singing career.
